Black Aluminium & White uPVC. Yes or No?
Most homeowners choose one colour for all their windows and patio doors but it's not a hard and fast rule. Sometimes,...
After ten years in Cardiff, we’ve installed thousands of windows and doors in a variety of house styles across South Wales.
Cardiff is a modern city, yet it has many buildings from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. These buildings are made of many different materials such as Bath stone, blue Pennant stone and red brick – except in Cathays Park where Portland stone is predominant. Grey Lias stone features heavily in the construction of Cardiff’s medieval buildings (the keep of Cardiff Castle, Llandaff Cathedral and St John the Baptist’s church) but absent from later ones. Two recent buildings in Cardiff Bay, Senedd and Wales Millennium Centre make conspicuous use of Welsh slate together with glass and steel.
When helping our Cardiff customers to choose their double glazing, we often have to balance the integrity of the building with the modern demands of the homeowner. There is so much choice in windows and doors now that we can always find the right solution.
Old timber sash windows are known for being draughty and difficult to open and close. Often they have been painted many times over the years and with every coat of paint, the windows become stiffer.
Modern uPVC sash windows are a lovely feature that maintains the period charm and benefits from modern technology. All of our windows are engineered with precision for smooth opening and closing, providing exceptional thermal efficiency and the best security.
Sometimes, sash windows are replaced with casement windows. In this case, the stone pillars take up a fair bit of space, meaning that casement windows would have been quite narrow and would not have suited the house.
Sash windows may be double hung, which means that you can open them from the top or the bottom. This would be useful if you have children or pets that could reach a low open window. Opening at the top means that you can safely allow for airflow while keeping them safe.

Sash windows are very popular in Cardiff. Often they are the only solution when the bay is made up of stone pillars. Our beautiful sash windows retain the traditional look but give all of the benefits you would expect from modern double glazed technology. Smooth operation, thermally efficient, secure. stylish and virtually no maintenance.
Not all sash windows are the same though. Our customer in Cardiff suggested these Rosewood posts and to be honest we weren’t that sure but it works very well for this traditional house.
We will work with you to achieve the look that you want. You don’t have to follow the crowd or repeat the style of the old windows. The addition of the glazing bars also helps to give this house a unique look.
The most popular colour in Cardiff is white but anthracite is becoming more popular. It’s not a rule but it seems that when the window is surrounded by light stone, the anthracite provides a stunning contrast. When the window is surrounded by brick the contrast is reduced and customers favour white.
Whichever colour you choose, the interior can be white so that your home looks light and spacious. Visit this page to find out more about sash windows. Heath Windows and doors are the Cardiff Sash Window Company to choose for quality products and superb service.
Naturally, we also have many houses in and around Cardiff that lend themselves to modern windows and doors.
The stunning Solidor Flint 2 Composite door in a beautiful anthracite grey matches perfectly with the windows, fascia, soffits and guttering. Solidor composite doors have a 48mm solid timber core that offers superior strength and fantastic levels of security.
This front door is beautifully finished with an Avon slimline handle and traditional letter plate in black; this installation lifts this house to a whole new level.
Ultion Locks are a revolutionary locking system that when locked, stays locked!
When an Ultion lock detects an attack, a hidden lock within the Ultion automatically engages so that even when snapped twice nothing gets past it. Leaving a key on the inside of the lock won’t affect its performance either.
Customers often struggle with the idea of changing colour. That’s not surprising. It’s hard to imagine and difficult to do something different from the neighbours. You can see from this installation that the brave choice was the right one. No doubt some of the neighbours will follow.
Relatively new to the mass market are these double glazed flush windows. These are fabulous for replacing old wooden windows, which are not energy efficient while maintaining the traditional look. These uPVC windows are so authentic, that they are even being accepted in some conservation areas in England and Wales.
You can choose from mitred or butted joints, depending on how authentic you want your replacement windows to look.
Constructed from uPVC with all of the benefits you would expect from the best double glazing supplier in Cardiff, these are windows that will have your friends asking where you got them from.
As with all our other uPVC windows, there is a wide choice of colours and finishes and the flexibility of opening windows. The beauty of these windows is that whether the windows are open or closed, the sightlines remain the same, creating a harmonious look.
This is quite an unusual house. The old draughty aluminium door and obscure glazing made it look very dated. It’s a good example of not having to stay with what was there before. Originally the door area had a door on the right and a glazed panel on the left. Placing the door in the centre with matching panels on either side turns the door into a real feature and certainly improves the kerb appeal.
Originally the windows had only opening small opening windows at the top. Large side opening windows allow for better airflow and look modern.
Overall the house has taken on an appearance of splendour with the door and triangular window section above it as the crowning glory. As with all of our double glazed windows, they are not just built to look good. The windows also have superb thermal efficiency and carry a ten-year guarantee.
