Sometimes, sash windows are replaced with casement windows. In this case, the stone pillars take up a fair bit of space, meaning that casement windows would have been quite narrow and would not have suited the house.

Sash windows may be double hung, which means that you can open them from the top or the bottom. This would be useful if you have children or pets that could reach a low open window. Opening at the top means that you can safely allow for airflow while keeping them safe.

Stunning Oak Windows in Dinas Powys, Nr Cardiff

This is quite an unusual house. The old draughty aluminium door and obscure glazing made it look very dated. It’s a good example of not having to stay with what was there before. Originally the door area had a door on the right and a glazed panel on the left. Placing the door in the centre with matching panels on either side turns the door into a real feature and certainly improves the kerb appeal.

Originally the windows had only opening small opening windows at the top. Large side opening windows allow for better airflow and look modern.
