We’ve written previously about how to dress your windows for this Christmas, but if you find you have some free time and would like to get a little artsy this festive season, why not make your own hanging decorations?
Don’t worry, you don’t have to be Neil Buchanan from Art Attack to make these Christmas adornments. Here are 5 easy to make Christmas decorations you can hang from your windows:
Do you have a load of wooden pegs hanging round your utility room? Then why not transform them into little angels? All you’ll need is some fabric, gold thread, cotton, glue and coloured pens. Oh and a little glitter if you like your decorations to sparkle.
The peg works as a base for the whole decoration, forming the body of the angel. Simply surround the peg in fabric to form a dress and draw on a face, before decorating to create wings and a halo. It’s that easy. Don’t forget to add some string so she can be hung from your window!
If you want to get more creative, there are a lot of peg doll tutorials on Youtube. This cute book will also give you lots of ideas for Christmas and the rest of the year.
Making ornaments cannot be easier than with salt dough. Think Play Dough that hardens when you bake it.
All you’ll need is 1 cup of salt and 1 cup of plain flour, gradually adding water until the desired consistency is achieved. Then shape and bake. Don’t forget a hole for ribbon or string to thread through!
Once out of the oven and cooled, paint and decorate however you and your kids like. Then hang. You can find more ideas on the BBC website.
Nothing says “Christmas” quite like holly and berries. And although holly wreaths may be a little prickly to make, the materials can be resourced for free. Snip the holly from a bush in your garden or ask permission to take some from your neighbours’.
Bind together or place into florists’ foam to create a beautiful wreath of green.
Down through the bunny hole, around the big tree, up pops the bunny and off goes she! If you’ve always wanted to learn to knit then now may be the perfect excuse to start. A personalised Christmas stocking would make a touching gift for friends and family. Plus, it would look amazing hanging anywhere in their home.
The easiest hanging decoration to craft on this list is paper chains. All you need is strips of coloured card or paper and some tape. Feed through and secure each piece and you’ll have a long chain in no time at all! These hook perfectly on the end of curtain rails to add some Christmas cheer to your window space.
Of course, these are just a few suggestions for hanging Christmas decorations you could craft this festive season. But whether you have UPVC sliding sash windows, vertical sliders or are in the market for new ones, we’re sure these decorations will look fabulously festive hanging behind their panes.
